Tour A follows the story of the island's people, from the beach where tradition says the first settlers landed to the crater rim where the last great cult was born.

You see the red quarry of the topknots, the seven moai of Akivi and the moai with restored eyes at Tahai, and you finish at Orongo, above the sea, where the Birdman competition took place. It is a day of stories as much as statues.

The day, stop by stop

Anakena beach and Ahu Nau Nau

The white-sand beach where tradition says the first settlers landed. The moai of Ahu Nau Nau have kept their red topknots, protected for centuries by the sand.

Te Pito Kura on the north coast

A quiet ahu by the sea. The fallen moai here is the largest ever raised on a platform, and a smooth round stone nearby is known as the navel of the world.

Puna Pau, the red quarry of the pukao

The volcanic quarry where the red topknots were carved. Several of them still lie where they were left.

Ahu Akivi and its seven moai

Seven moai that stand inland and look out to sea, unlike almost every other moai on the island. Tradition links them to seven explorers sent ahead to find the island.

Tahai, by Hanga Roa

A ceremonial site on the edge of town, best known for Ahu Ko Te Riku, the moai with restored eyes. Many people come back here in the evening for the sunset.

Rano Kau crater

A volcanic crater more than a kilometre wide, with a lake of floating reeds. The view from the rim is one of the best on the island.

Orongo, home of the Birdman

The ceremonial village on the rim of Rano Kau, where young men once raced to bring back the first sooty tern egg of the season. The rocks around it are covered in carvings.
